Shipping From China to the USA: Buyer Guide

The U.S. US$800 de minimis duty-free threshold is suspended for nearly all commercial parcels: goods of China and Hong Kong origin lost the threshold on 2 May 2025, all origins lost it on 29 August 2025, and CBP formalized an indefinite suspension for all modes on 24 June 2026. Budget for a customs entry and applicable duties on any China purchase, and verify current CBP and carrier guidance before shipping.

Important: Planning checklist, not legal advice. Import rules change; verify the destination authority and carrier terms before shipping.

Checklist

  • Use a specific English declaration and retain payment evidence.
  • Treat the US$800 duty-free threshold as suspended: CBP's 24 June 2026 interim final rules require a customs entry and applicable duties for nearly all low-value parcels, except genuine gifts of US$100 or less.
  • Confirm FDA, FCC, USDA, CPSC, or other agency requirements where relevant.
  • Ask which U.S. carrier completes final delivery and how claims are filed.
  • Avoid counterfeit goods and products that infringe U.S. intellectual-property rights.
