How to tell if a Chinese factory is legit (before you pay)

A few simple checks that reveal whether a factory is real or just a middleman with a nice website.

There are real factories in China. Good ones. Clean ones. People who actually care about what they make.

And then there are trading companies pretending to be factories.

Here’s how to spot the difference before you send any money.

The “website test” means nothing

A nice website costs $500. Anyone can build one.

I’ve seen trading companies with beautiful sites. I’ve seen real factories with ugly sites that haven’t been updated since 2019.

Don’t judge by the website.

Three things that actually tell you something

1. Ask for a video call inside the workshop

Not a pre-recorded video. A live call. Ask them to walk around and show you the machines, the workers, the raw materials.

Real factories will do this. Trading companies will make excuses.

2. Check their business license

In China, manufacturing companies have a license that says “Manufacturing” (生产). Trading companies say “Trading” (贸易).

Ask for a photo of their license. Most will send it. Then run it through Google Translate.

3. Order a sample

Not just any sample. Ask for small changes — different color, different size, different engraving.

A real factory can make small changes. A trading company has to go ask someone else. Learn more about our sample review process.

Red flags to watch for

• They only communicate through WhatsApp or WeChat (no email trail)
• They push you to pay in full upfront
• They can’t answer technical questions about materials or production
• Their “factory” looks like a showroom with a few machines in the back

The truth is

Good factories exist. But they don’t always market themselves well. Bad factories exist too. They’re often better at marketing.

The difference shows up when you start asking real questions.

A quick note

This isn’t about blaming trading companies. Some trading companies are honest and add value.

The problem is when they pretend to be something they’re not.

So ask questions. Get on video calls. Order samples with changes.
